AI Companion Memory Test: A Fair Continuity Protocol

Check short-session recall and later continuity without confusing a polished reply with proven memory.

A visual map for comparing needs, evidence, and decisions
Keep the test fair. Use fictional adults, identical prompts and current service evidence. Leave unknown facts unresolved.

Define three harmless facts

Choose three fictional, non-sensitive details: a favorite imaginary café, a planned story event, and a character preference. Give them naturally during the conversation rather than as a numbered memory test. Keep the facts identical in every option and save the exact wording. Never use a real address, password, medical detail, or another person’s private information.

Create distance before recall

Continue with unrelated turns before asking about the details. Immediate repetition tests attention more than continuity. Ask indirectly so the answer must use context rather than copy your sentence. Record which facts return accurately, which are guessed, and whether the system admits uncertainty instead of inventing a confident answer.

Separate session recall from return visits

A result inside one chat does not prove that information persists after closing the browser or starting a new session. If continuity across visits matters, repeat later using the same account context and note the time gap. Check the current product explanation for controls that may affect stored memories. Do not assume a missing detail means every future session will fail.

Test correction and removal

Change one fictional detail and ask the companion to use the new version. Later, request that another detail not be used. Observe the conversation, then inspect any available memory controls separately. Conversational compliance and actual stored-data deletion are different questions. If removal matters, look for a documented control or support answer before sharing personal material.

Watch for persuasive guessing

A smooth response can feel like recall even when it is a plausible guess. Use unusual but harmless facts and ask a question with a checkable answer. Mark partial matches separately from exact recall. Avoid claiming a product remembers forever from one result; your dated note should describe only the conditions you observed.

Make continuity one factor, not the whole choice

Strong recall may be valuable, but it can increase the importance of clear storage and deletion controls. Balance convenience with the sensitivity of what you intend to share. If you only want lightweight fictional roleplay, persistent memory may matter less than tone or price. Your requirement brief should explain why continuity deserves its chosen weight.
